Day 2 (22 May) - Recap

In our first full day in Paris, I can't think of anything we did apart from eat. Therefore, I'll focus on the food here. We slept pretty late (~1pm) because of the time difference (and because we love to sleep). Then we headed up the Rue Des Martyrs to Monmartre. Along the way we stopped at the neighborhood patisserie for a "mini kugloff" (some sort of raisin cinnamon thing - presumably German) and a "briochette" (little brioche). Merri got a petit pain au raisin. Popped in for a quick coffee at La Cigale and then it was a million steps up to the top of Monmartre. The main square of Monmartre is called Place du Tertre and is home to about 100 artists who sit outside with their paintings and sell them to tourists. We couldn't possibly think about art before some beer (Amstel, Pelforth) and cheese (brie, camembert?) at La Cremaillere right in the middle of the square. We found a painting that we loved, painted by a surly man named Fabien, but had to run to the ATM for some cash to buy it (don't worry, haggling was involved). Along the way back from the ATM, Merri found some shoes in the garbage. They may be slightly too big and have possibly been chewed by a dog, but Jimmy Choo is Jimmy Choo, right? On the way down the hill we saw an awesome soccer guy (see vids below) and saw some people throw pies in the face of someone who was being interviewed. Merri rode a carousel and then it was time for un crepe aux beurre et sucre at the oddly named Cafe Kakoo. A quick pop-in at the Boucherie du Progres for some smoked and cured pork products and it was off to Pigalle. Pigalle is the Paris red-light district. A place to see, I guess, but not a place you'd want to be after dark. This is also where the Moulin Rouge is located. Stopped at the G20 Supermarché to pick up some Coke Light and wine (A. Monnier - 2002 Crozes-Hermitage) which we enjoyed on the hotel's back patio. After a quick nap it was off to the No Stress Café (right on the corner) for an odd mix of a terrible mojito, a cheeseburger, and a strange Asian stir fry-type thing. Not our best meal in Paris. Followed up with a delicious chocomousse (mer thought it tasted like brownie batter – a good thing) at Tea Follies next door to No Stress and it was off to bed – fat and happy – to dream of French pastry for breakfast.
